Removed, merciless you flour

On Habré, and on other resources, you can find hundreds of articles praising the remote work in every way. And how can it be otherwise: life is almost without Mondays, alarm clocks and with rather far-seated chiefs. It would seem, live and be happy, sit at the PC in a stretched T-shirt, change to a home exercise bike, do not worry about whether you are good at eating pizza with colleagues, do the work in a more comfortable mode. And do not listen to office gossip and drink cool tea or coffee.
I never thought so. I loved the office and this quiet concentration of the workplace. I thought I would never happen to me. But the remote happened. Two years already. And I'm writing here on my beloved Habr, my very subjective post - just to have the second side of this, as it turned out, neck-pulling medal.
Removed, merciless you flour

I, the manager, and the indisputable advantages of the remote work

I'm 35. I'm not a programmer or an engineer, I'm more like a manager in the near-anywhere sphere. Before that he worked as an engineer, then as the head of the promotion service (and it was cool!) In an international IT company. But the salary in our millionaire is far from a millionth, that's why I was pretty easily tempted by the capital company for two reasons: the most interesting and close to the soul and brain project and a decent salary for my life in my city. Moving to Moscow for me is absolutely impossible for very personal reasons. Yes, frankly, and does not pull. So, they met me and gave me permission to work remotely.
Euphoria was not a second. There was an alarm: at home I could not work, there were too many noisy people, 4 people per treshka - too much. We need a place. Okay, with a place to decide - there are coworkers (I only learned this word two years ago). While we will think positively and appreciate the pros. They are, and I will be the last scum, if I do not disclose the objective advantages.
Finance. Receiving a salary just below Moscow in a similar position, in your city you feel not like a boss, but still at a decent level. Of course, the situation is changing, but this is in the minuses.
Health. If you respect yourself and do not sharpen everything, because almost nobody looks at you, you have the opportunity to warm up a little, not hesitating, once again go out into the street and saturate the brain with oxygen (in the office you would be chattering during this break). At first I, of course, sharpened, but then I took myself in hand and now I feel that the walk instead of lunch with colleagues has benefited. And instead of dinner - kefir, fruit, all business.
Time. You manage your time more than ever: you can redistribute tasks, work at a convenient pace (the main thing is to do the work honestly and in good faith) - not because time is shifted, but because you do not spend part of it at meetings (often in the office are endless), do not get distracted to chatter and office tea, do not answer the small questions of colleagues (both for developers and for managers).
Organization of the workplace. You can dump the desktop, hang a poster with AC /DC or Ilona Mask, put a vase of apples, a plush penguin, or build a stack of necessary books - no one will pay attention to your table and your personal mess /order /world order, who /what inspires you.
Organization of the thought process. Everyone likes to work under something with their own: music, radio, Tudem or lectures on the theory of probability. In headphones, of course. In the office, it is eating traffic and for this you can get a comment, suggestion, yellow card. Not because there are those who allocate 300 MB of traffic for a week (yes, this is also in IT) or someone pities a piece of unlimited, but because the figs will prove that he listened to the background, especially if it's YouTube or VKontakte. By the way, I work under Paul Moriah, fucking awesome. When work is more chaotic - under talk (radio, YouTube, online lectures in Russian).
Not a bad set of benefits, you must agree. Of course, we can say that I forgot about effective interaction with coworkers, about the opportunity to work from home in a thunderstorm or frost, about work with Bali, etc. Well, it's kind of a myth. And it did not concern me, why - below.

And now about the experience and disadvantages of

I'm not an introvert and not an extrovert in general - the behavior depends on the person. I can hang over the project alone and refuse to help the team, I can start all day and move to the goal. In general, an ordinary person. Therefore, minuses are purely my experience, and I will be terribly happy to read about your comments and find something for myself.
So, subjectivity on the subjective side is the minus of the remote work.
Office. I have visited many capitals many times in my capitals and I've seen covorking there - I will not even describe it, it's cool and not so expensive (especially lucky Muscovites). What turned out to be four coworkings in our city: a workshop for creative people (you sit, and around you spin a potter's wheel, play a guitar, embroider, discuss a children's sports carpet project, wake up and conduct training for personal growth), a cafe with a per minute payment (already it's clear that it's impossible to work there), a place in the office of the company, which has five tables and a basement with three programmers. I started with the latter, but it was closed and I moved to the penultimate with all the following: I'm just a guest, I can not influence the noise level and the way my desk is moving. One could rent a mini-office, but for some reason 90% refused to hand over to an individual because of fire safety (say, there were cases), and 10% had such a person and a state of rooms that it is better not to mess with.
Interaction with colleagues. Glory to the Internet, we have everything - electronics, 100500 working and informal chats, CRM, project management system and tasks, etc. It is very, very helps to work as a remote worker. I can safely say that even we rarely resort to telephony - communication is quick and productive, all are always available. But a piece of iron is a piece of iron and no virtualization of chatum can replace a short and lively conversation, a brainstorm, a rally at the end of the sprint, a direct question and discussion. Even worse, when newcomers come, but you have not seen them yet during the next business trip - for them you are as real as Skype or a bot.
Iron SELF Discipline. Remote work is RA-BO-TA. That is, in the working schedule of your company, with lunch in the right interval, with mandatory participation in all the necessary projects, with accountability and responsibility. This is not freelancing. Many do not understand this. To work in the working mode and to be essentially a micro-office of the parent company, we need an iron discipline: believe me, it's difficult to force myself not to oversleep and not be late at first. I did not have problems with this, but my coworking colleagues were there: they work almost 4 hours a day. True, their conscience does not torment, they are just a generator of otmaz on proshannym deadline, you can write down and the application to do.

They are :-)
The attitude of colleagues. As I said, for the majority of colleagues you remain virtual with all the following: your opinion is the tenth, your illness is perceived as a short-term technical failure, some do not even suspect that you are. There are two important problems: a) inside the team, you can work out something cool and effective; b) any conflict occurs in the tone in which the opponent READS your words in the chat. There is no way to convey intonation, semitone, openness or, on the contrary, categorical. Your voice is in your colleague's head, but does not belong to you. It is necessary to watch yourself triple, and this kills the nerves.
Tools for work. It's good for me - I'm a sysadmin in the past (okay, Padavan sysadmin), then a network engineer and it's not hard for me to fix a computer, return the Internet to a common router, fix software and hardware failures, etc. But if you do not own all of this, you do not have much to rely on, unless you are in a steep coworking and such problems are not included in the payment. Sitting in someone else's office, you are for yourself. And for a broken mouse you go not to the admin, but to the store.
Career prospects. You are virtual, which means that you can not open up to 100 - even if you are a mega programmer, god DevOps and marketing guru. In fact, you drop out of the evaluation: yes, you are appreciated, but you are beyond the rating. Here, as with the children: what grows with the grandmother, the one is closer to her.
Wages and bonuses. Salary due to the previous paragraph changes once in a century - simply because the manager is not fully ready to evaluate you and your work, because there is still a suspicion that you are not working out somewhere. For the same reason, there may not be bonuses if they, for example, are tied to KPIs, including specific indicators.
Working hours. If you work well and responsibly, then the remote work necessarily blows your notorious worklife balance, and takes all the provided volume. For example, I work on weekends, nervously doing something from the tablet, standing in a traffic jam, and even forgot to go on vacation. But this, of course, entirely depends on you: how much time you are willing to give to the cause.
Coworkers. I was surrounded and surrounded by programmers, managers, business coaches and a salesman of something like 1C for little ones. In short, people without particularly common interests, with varying degrees of sound accompaniment of work (the salesman tries, the programmer screams in skype in English, the trainer conducts trainings for the half-wall). In general, if you found a communal room or watched a film about it (especially described in the "Pokrovsky Gate" and "Stilyagi"), then in the coworking of the non-capital level (which with segmentation and partitions) you will find it. Sometimes it's fun, sometimes - even useful.
Loneliness. Sooner or later, there are attacks of total loneliness, awareness of uselessness and isolation. It hurts so much that you even feel it physically. At such moments, you remember where the resume is and even sometimes update it. It is during such periods that the risk of conflicts and misunderstandings, insults, accusations is great. And it does not happen to you only if everything is in one place. If you gave your soul to work, it will happen. Such periods need to be experienced, distracted, to find motivation (I have these projects themselves, which I am ready to devote to life). I wrote this article at such a moment.
The world of communications gave us freedom, an infinite freedom of choice, work, realization. He took away from us the value of human communication and interaction, the value of this: gather and resolve by brainstorm for five minutes. Together, this is for some people joy, for someone - the load. In any case, this is an interesting experience. Despite all the disadvantages, I'm not sure now that I can say for sure whether I'm ready for office work. But this is only related to projects that I do not want to leave under any circumstances.
And how are you?
