What's wrong with the current generation of MacBook: three problems that are better to fix in the next generation
This is some kind of, perhaps, a special form of sloupokshestva, but, almost on the threshold of this year's expected presentation of Apple's new generation MacBook (maybe even today), I decided that there would be no better time to become the owner of the MacBook for the present the current generation - even if burdened with a risk morally obsolete before I get home. Yes, the one that without a fan, with one USB-C port and audio output - in general, love with the first news. But conversations about his lack of power did not have an acquaintance. And somehow I immediately set up to wait for the next generation. However, hello: no matter how controversial or weak, he is now my worker. In the end, how much can I risk taking into account that the most resource-intensive task is usually a browser? Maybe I will not have to complain about the performance of the MacBook (spoiler: not yet had to).
Behind the noise around the gadgets is almost imperceptible, as laptops have approached the perfection of
After a week, it became clear that the MacBook 12 "is definitely not a failure, but there are three things that need to be done in the next generation so that it can finally turn out to be a success."
A week for me is a moment of maximum clarity regarding the merits and demerits of any new technology. When the memories, habits and reflexes of the previous gadget are still fresh, but you have already found out everything new that you have enough for the next update - and this balance has not yet begun to be concealed by new habits, beyond which it will not be possible to distinguish "comfortably" from "endured-fell in love" ". The same happened with the "MacBook" - over the summer, my thoughts have not changed, and impressions have become blunted with a habit.
And all because the full-sized 15-inch MacBook Pro, which seemed to me the wisest choice for remotely operating people, was not a particularly good choice for remotely operating not from the house rights. Surprisingly, two kilograms in the backpack are felt. - and this feeling is not 201? but a nostalgic 200? when my old Toshiba in the plastic body was thickened like an armor. A more elegant but still weighty Pro 15 aluminum bar would itself have fallen behind the slab of the bullet-proof shield of the presidential guard, but the main problem was exactly what it was all аbout: delighting in the forgotten in the era of ultrabooks the space of a fifteen-inch screen, the MBP in any situation on the move constantly appeared a little more than it would be ideal at this moment: in an airplane, in a taxi and at a cafe table - he touched, rested and hung over.
Going on for the May holidays, I decided that I had enough to endure it - and instead of my aluminum elephant I left already with a pink crumb of a MacBook 12 '' weighing ??? kg - exactly twice as light as a MacBook Pro 15. 'And this difference is felt - more precisely, the weight Pro 15 "is felt, and the MacBook 12" - it seems to be not.
Why not Pro with a 13-inch screen - the same familiar workhorse, but already economical-non-emergency-series-compatible dimensions? That's why: in the new Pro (only smaller) there would be nothing new, except for a constant reminder, as I still lohanulsya with dimensions.
Three things that just have to change in the MacBook 2
This, of course, does not mean that at least one of them will come true. But even if all three converge - it will be just logical.
1) 13-inch screen
One of the most unpleasant sensations that have cut me off on getting acquainted with the MacBook is its display. The impression that he did not get more than 12 inches only because of his own mini-culture, completely dispelled the wide black bars around the screen - like the cheapest netbooks. It turned out to be a 12-inch laptop in the corpus "for growth". 13-inch screen in the same dimensions and, perhaps, the same case - it's not even an upgrade, but simply a return to the natural course of things.
But who broke it? Marketers, of course. Apparently, they decided that the appearance of a lightly crippled new model will give odds to the still-living sub-brand of the MacBook Air. And of course, there will be an opportunity in the next generation to "dramatically upgrade" the screen, saving on the new case.
When he first appeared - "Air" was a breakthrough, a dream and an object of envy. As it was before, Apple again created a new type of device, which did not exist yesterday, and tomorrow the market no longer knows how to do without it.
MacBook Air was the first snowflake to launch an ultra-avalanche of avalanches, which are now successfully feeding rivals who make computers on Windows. But the niche of the "Air" itself was a dead end. Avant-garde on the background of the then line of notebooks Apple MacBook Air suddenly was deprived of the market point of support, when its niche was shared between the newest MacBook and MacBook Pro 13. "
Three sub-brands in this clearing had nothing to share - except for this third superfluous. Defeated "grandfathers" - of course, Apple was not going to abandon the MacBook and MacBook Pro. And not kept in his league Air was cynically transplanted to the tablets - suddenly he not only finds his place, but will help the aipedes?
Now, when Air is a classification from a ruler of tablets, it is already possible to complete the number by removing the rabbit from the hat - still his ears sticked out from the very beginning.
Thus, we will have a new line of notebooks of standard sizes - which is already quite good, since in this case their dimensions will not increase.
The 13-inch MacBook will remain as light, thin and quiet without a fan - just what you need for people who do not need much from a laptop, but who can not do without it. I refer myself to this category.
From the 13-inch MacBook Pro, the usual MacBook will not differ in screen size, but something equally important: the filling. Competition, as with Air, which was just not about performance, but about the ease and compactness, there will not be. But there will be a choice between moderately compact, productive and mobile, suitable for the nomadic life of Pro 13 "and the most compact, lightweight, noiseless, but still a laptop, not a toy - the MacBook.
And, of course, Big Daddy - 15-inch MacBook Pro. It's terrible to think, but there were times even 17-inch laptops.
2) Must have Face ID
It so happened that I'm not used to entering the password when unlocking the laptop long before the appearance on the MacBook Pro Touch ID. Perhaps the only spoonful of honey in the barrel with the Touch Bar did not work, because before that I was already used to the good thing on the Lenovo ThinkPad with the fingerprint scanner.
And the Touch ID on laptops, as well as on iPhones, requires the first time after logging on to the password, which Lenovo did not require at all ever since setting up the input on the print. Because of this, I even once forgot my system password. And I would gladly forget, but Pro wanders.
A MacBook and at all - a return to manual labor. However, I do not think that this needlework will survive the change of generations. Surely this is expected by many - and, for sure, many are waiting for the Touch ID. But, in my opinion, Face ID - much more logical. And that's why.
It is unlikely that Apple will once again recycle the look and layout of the keyboard for the introduction of a single Touch ID without Touch Bar. And the Touch Bar is not an experiment so obviously failed on the "bug" to cancel it with the update of this year, but obviously not succeeding even close to scaling to other rulers, except Pro.
Touch ID is the future of yesterday. With the advent of Face ID, fingerprint scanning for identification has become a dead-end branch of evolution. Touch ID is the diesel engines of the world of gadgets: they were also improved for years, preparing to replace gasoline engines due to lower consumption of cheaper fuel. But all this suddenly lost its meaning, when unexpectedly (only something predicted from the moment of the invention of DVS), the next stage of progress was staked out with electric cars. Diesel can still hold out in other applications, but any automaker that is now announcing a strategy to develop their diesel line until 2030 will earn only puzzled looks.
In this case, the Face ID laptop will fit in with even smaller losses than on the smartphone - on the "MacBooks" enough space for the sensor next to the webcam to do without a transplant monobrovi.
3) The second USB-C port instead of the headphone jack
Raise your hands, how many iPhone owners can not forget 3.5 mm? Are there many owners of androids who, honestly, can not understand who and why is still drill this strange hole in their gadgets?
Whatever it was, the farewell to the audio output on the "MacBook" seems to me to be an alternative (though, again, by no one promised) decision.
First, Apple is unlikely to surprise us with a complete lack of connectors.
Secondly, Apple is unlikely to surprise us with the preservation of a single USB port
Thirdly, if my hypothesis about
is true. understated Prioru
the screen diagonal of the current "MacBook", and the MacBook 2 will retain the body of its predecessor - there's simply nowhere to drill new connectors.
So, the new connector can appear only in place of the old one. And replacing the orthodox 3.5mm audio output with a more universal (and not inconsistent with its use for headphones) Type-C port is not only an option, but also necessary.
Apple is very boldly realizing its strategy with respect to ports and connectors, so it's scary to lose this or that port, they say, all the others are fine, but that's impossible without it - you can only see its ultimate goal: the rejection of wires and connectors in principle. Data transmission by air progresses faster than electricity, but when wireless charging is tightened - the end of USB-C connectors, whose functions of information transport has long been duplicated by wireless protocols and which will only play the role of charging, will come to an end.
However, Apple does not do it impeccably.
First, saving the proprietary Lightning port with and already using USB-C does not make any sense, except for the ritual sacrifice to the spirit of Steve Jobs, which should continue to please users who are still buying separate wires for their iPhones and AirPods. In this case, perhaps the last port before their complete disappearance will still not be Type-C, but Lightning or its, God forbid, replacement.
Secondly - and this is not a pagan rituals can not explain - Apple is strangely inconsistent in bundling their laptops. Both the MacBook Pro and the MacBook come with USB-C connectors only, but the Lightning adapter in the bundle of both laptops comes with standard USB. The adapter from USB to USB-C is not included. It's hard to say what would be more strange: its lack and impossibility to connect the adapter to Lightning to the laptop with which it was bundled, or its availability, allowing this strange chain to be completed.
4) Bonus track: one more attempt with the keyboard
As with the rejection of connectors, Apple's intention to invent a new way to replace the good old clave is well known. But they are moving towards this goal from two ends: from one end they are busy with the invention of replacing the current keyboard, on the other they are moving along the path of destroying the existing one. And while the progress of inventors is not so obvious, the progress of the destroyers is obvious. At this rate, we will remain without a keyboard before we get its alternative.
To the crippled arrow unit in the MacBook Pro, the Touch Bar was added instead of the function keys and an incredibly fragile mechanism, the keys of which knock like miners' helmets on strike.
In the MacBook in place function keys - and they are much more convenient to use even for managing music than it allows a glamorous and useless Touch Bar, but the left Shift is truncated twice. Look at the Shift key on your keyboard. If you are right handed, your left hand is always somewhere near it, it is a fundamentally important key. And now imagine that it has become twice shorter (one and a half times shorter than Caps Lock!), And at the place where the Shift key was previously stretched, there are now other keys, which will permanently mutilate the text while you break your reflexes.
In the MacBook 2 will probably be new experiments with the keyboard. I hope, this time - something from the category "we realized that we have to live with her for a long time, and this time something has really improved a little."
And I would like to see the new macbook have refused from the touchpad drowned in the case. I never leave the feeling that around the perimeter of the touchpad collects dirt along the walls like under the nails of a homeless person. But this can still be experienced, especially if the remaining changes are true as in this list. In the end, now all this is not, but I still carry the MacBook with me everywhere, and at home I work for Pro - solid, almost like a desktop.
If my ideas about the logical, reasonable, beautiful and necessary to be introduced in the next generation will coincide with Apple's ideas, the new MacBook with the screen almost in the entire cover, Face ID, without a fan and 3.5 mm jack will be closest to the ideal of a compact laptop . Because this is how progress progresses: before going to the next level - to charging without wires, entering without a keyboard, a picture without a display - what we will have on the previous one should reach near perfection.
P.S. About this evening (Moscow time).
In my opinion, so many preliminary leaks did not know yet any September presentation of Apple. For example, three new models of "iPhone" Internet viewed in all angles in August. The pile of cakes was merged in advance, and the biggest remaining riddle is just the exact name of the models.
But no one could accurately predict whether the new MacBook will be shown today. In theory, he was expected back in June. Now the expectations are even stronger, although it is unlikely that they can be heard behind the army of fans of iPhones. But the presentation and so, presumably, will be crammed with so many announcements that the MacBook can again be rescheduled.
However, I'm still interested to see how TV OS 12 will change.
It may be interesting
