Light patterns of Amazon
On August ? 201? the article "3r3r3? Dark Patterns of Amazon
" Was published, not only that the translation, but also containing very little factual data, in fact this article is the point of view of a buyer pretending to be treated with IT, tester (and how else can you call a person who made purchases, tried to write reviews and went to make global conclusions) - can be attributed to such.
I can not keep silent, being the representative of the numerous Russian-speaking community of Amazon-sellers.
That's why, looking at the frontend, I also know that there is a backend, and it is extremely interesting, both from the IT point of view and from the point of view of big business.
So, my attention was first of all drawn to this screenshot.
In the last part of it there is a text circled in red (here's Amazon Verified Purchase Reviews ) so I'll tell you the background of why such bans began to appear and what they really mean.
For starters, several sources:
Article on Washington Post (incidentally, the newspaper belongs to Bezos, the owner of Amazon).
As you can see, the problem of fake reviews has long been known, moreover, in serious publications and on TV it has been said, and more than once.
Naturally, Amazon itself, being the developer of artificial intelligence platforms (on the request of amazon artificial intelligence will find many interesting articles), already more than half a year perfectly finds artificially created reviews and removes them.
Moreover, a huge wave of deletions swept, very many sellers (working on the FBA model), reviews were simply deleted cleanly.
Imagine the seller's shock when he comes to the computer in the morning and sees that out of 200 reviews there was not a single one left, and sales also sank to zero.
Yes, for many years on Amazon there was (and now exists) a vicious practice of cardinal influence of reviews on sales, because at one time it was very easy to get feedback in exchange for distribution.
The buyer wrote about this phrase in a response: I write my honest opinion, I received this product, that is it was allowed by Amazon and therefore a huge stream of sellers poured in (especially from Ukraine, Russia and other countries badly affected by the financial crisis of 2014).
Literally a year later, "honest feedback" was banned and sellers had to create secret communities in Facebook, special resources were created where it was possible to distribute goods to customers in large quantities and hope also for reviews.
The mechanisms of these hands are omitted, since it can pull a very long article, it's more interesting.
As a result, the whole situation has become so tense, manipulation of the reviews has already gotten so far everyone, especially respectable Americans, that apparently the time has come for serious action on the part of Amazon.
And it happened!
On many listings Amazon not only erased feedback, but also put a ban on leaving new reviews, and not always on a time basis.
That is, on some listings the ban lasts more than a month, for some two weeks, some may leave feedback for some, and some do not (the possibility of leaving a response depends on many of the buyer's metrics).
You can write a fascinating detective on this topic, as I watched the moods and reactions of many hundreds of Amazon sellers (we also communicate in special face-to-face groups, meet in person), after such innovations. There were also invented a lot of tricky loopholes, including those based on the "holes" of the web interface in Amazon, for leaving feedback, but the struggle continues with varying success.
Most importantly, what follows from this, is that Amazon maneuvers between two necessities:
The need to cleanse your site of fake reviews, however hard it is, is an honest business and all the accents are put on it.
If large brands or sellers with a history already successfully trade for several years, and the total number of purchased reviews is not more than 30-50%, and most importantly, this number roughly correlates with these organic reviews, it is more profitable to just close your eyes, from the point of view big business and in terms of Big Data. I hope you understand me.
Returning now to the beginning of the article, a screenshot circled in red means only that the given listing is under suspicion, Amazon knows that he manipulates the reviews, and this is a ban on leaving comments from this point of view! Always comes to the seller a letter with something like this: You are suspected of manipulating reviews, on your listing is now a ban on leaving feedback and other letters (I will not quote the original of such letters).
To blame therefore Amazon is that it promotes the abandonment of fake reviews, at least unprofessional.
If you're wondering what else is happening in the inner kitchen while interacting Amazon-Buyer, write, I'll tell you. A couple of years have accumulated a few very interesting stories.
And all this from the point of view of high technology and the manifestation of artificial intelligence.
