The book "Modern PHP"
Although modern developers increasingly rely on network sources of information, it seems to me that books devoted to programming still have a niche. The articles represent the solution of specific problems, the description of specific moments. Books are a more general view of technology, a review of best practices, a full coverage of the technological process. In general, books are a set of articles devoted to one big topic, and complementing one another.
My acquaintance with the book "Modern PHP" took place in the fateful moment for me to return to programming in PHP after almost ten years of work outside active coding. I needed a quick overview of what happened in PHP recently and I got it with interest.
Despite the fact that the book is released "in the west" as much as in 201? and in Russia in 2016 and, it would seem, what "modern PHP" can we talk about? But I can assure you, the book is composed wonderfully well, and in principle it can not become obsolete.
Let's look inside and figure out why this is so.
The book consists of 3 parts: "Features of the language", "Advanced technology", "Deployment, testing and configuration." And a couple of applications: "Installing PHP" and "Local Development Environment"
The first part of the "Features of the language" tells how and to what PHP came from version 5.0. This is a wonderful short material, which describes not only the added functions, but also describes the best practices for using them. We consider namespaces, interfaces, traits, generators, closures, ZendOPcache, built-in HTTP-server. I, as missed the greater half of this mess, the information was extremely interesting.
The second part of "Advanced Technology" is devoted to the standards of PSR 1-? and all the same best practices. The author tells about the new world of PHP, in which frameworks recede in front of components. I liked this thought, I always considered frameworks bulky and internally shuddered from the need for their study, although, of course, much depends on specific tasks.
The third part of the book is formally devoted to deployment, profiling and testing. However, in fact, he talks about the community and the PHP ecosystem. It contains a lot of interesting links and gives the author's method of preparing a workplace for a specialist in PHP. The approach is interesting, but I was not close.
As you can see, the structure of the book is built not so much on specific aspects of the language as on a more general overview of technology. The author showed how good PHP is and in what direction the reader "dig further". In this, its value is a one-eyed look.
Is it worth buying this book? This is a question that you will have to answer yourself based on your objectives. The book is sensible and in my case it became an excellent addition to the already scratched book "PHP 5" by Z. Suraski and L. Atkinson. For me, these books are worth each other.
Since we have a review of the paper book, it is worth saying a few words about its appearance and parameters. The cover design is traditional for translations of O'REILLY publishing house, printed on good white paper, 300 pages, paperback, A5 format. It's a pleasure to take it in your hand, it's convenient to take it with you. Internal design also does not cause any complaints.
