We give the book "Harry Potter and the methods of rational thinking" to the Olympiadists
On July 1? we launched a non-for-profit crowdfunding to print "Harry Potter and the methods of rational thinking" . He collected more than 8 million rubles, becoming the second in the top of the Russian crowadding-projects on the amount of fees. After printing the print run, we will present the three-volume edition of the GPiMRM to schoolchildren and undergraduate /special students who won the Olympiads.
What is this about?
The book popularizes the ideas of critical thinking and effective altruism - and we decided that it is worthwhile to distribute it among the talented people who, thanks to the GPiMRM, will be able to bring the greatest benefit to the world.
Details - under the cut.
Less Wrong , whose members try to think rationally, discuss complex philosophical and scientific questions. Yudkovsky wrote a fanfiction on Harry Potter, in which the world of the wizard becomes more logical, and the motivation of the characters - understandable. For example, even Volan de Mort is not evil in pure form, he has his own views and an explanation of actions, someone can even agree with him.
The main character here is not in the house of silly, uneducated and evil Dursleys, but in the family of an academic professor who taught the boy from childhood. Smart Harry Potter encounters magic, reflects on how it works, why it violates the usual laws of physics, and applies the scientific method to understand and subordinate to it. All the characters here are different from those described by Joan Rowling, but most of all, Harry himself has changed. True, one of his qualities remained unchanged - he is still an upstart.
At least this novel is very well written - I could not tear myself away from it. It has more than a thousand pages, and while I read it, I did not work, I hardly ate or slept, it was so interesting. But besides, it seems to me that it contains a huge number of correct and useful ideas. This book can make people kinder, more humane, and teach them to approach their own lives and other people more responsibly, to be more rational. The author says that one should not blindly trust authorities, one must question one's own knowledge, and the main value is human life. Of course, these are not some incredible revelations, but we live in a time when people are treated with homeopathy, turn to fortunetellers, watch the "Battle of Psychics", so these ideas are clearly not enough.
This book will suit both fans of the original series of novels, and those who treat it calmly. The greatest buzz will be given to people who are interested in science, science and critical thinking - including those who are just beginning to discover all this for themselves.
In addition to "Harry Potter and methods of rational thinking", we will give olympiadnikam career guides "8?000 Hours" in Russian.
"8?000 Hours" is an organization engaged in research in the field of career choice, which gives a person a realization, brings pleasure and contributes the most to solving global problems of mankind.
Superman could save more lives
The translation of the GPiMM is ready and lies in the public domain . The layout of the "8?000 Hours" guide is still being finalized, but with preliminary versions of also available at .
What about the GPiMRM think some cool people:
Teacher of the MTC, coach of the Moscow team at the All-Russian Olympiad of schoolchildren in mathematics Vladimir Bragin:
In the book "Harry Potter and the methods of rational thinking" everyone can find something of their own. I was crammed with some episodes to my lips, my friends were different. It was funny to find this explanation in the difference of values.
A surprising combination of the ideas of Eliezer Yudkowski and those ideals for which the whole world loved the series of books by Joan Rowling: friendship and devotion, fighting injustice. In the guise of ideas about rationality and Bayesianism, you look at these things differently, with the eyes of a wiser Harry. If you can not get rid of the thought that attachment to close people and strong emotions run counter to a rational view of the world, interferes with subordinating life to some general plan, then perhaps this book will help you resolve these contradictions.
It's funny when the author explicitly points out to you the incidents and inconsistencies of the Rowling universe. Every time you think: "Why did not I notice it myself?"
In addition, reading this book, you can expand your knowledge about the history of science, cognitive distortions and the principles of scientific thinking in general. It is difficult to understand whether the narrative is specially designed in such a way that almost every page has references to something similar, or they would inevitably arise in any history with due care.
I highly recommend that you read this book, I'm sure you will not regret it!
The head of the research group of Bayesian methods, the research professor of the NNU Higher School of Economics, the head of the Center for In-Depth Learning and Bayesian Methods at the Higher School of Economics, head of the laboratory of machine training at the Moscow Center for Artificial Intelligence of Samsung Dmitry Vetrov:
As one of my graduate students, who recommended this book to me, said about what would have happened if Harry Potter had not grown up as a very kind boy, but a very clever boy. This is a wonderful book in which there are elements of a detective, strategic games, time travel, intrigue and a complex process of reaching an understanding between smart and ambitious people. But, from my point of view, the main thing in the book is the popular presentation of methods of logical (rational) thinking in conditions of uncertainty, a description of common mistakes in attempts of such thinking and how they can be avoided. Possession of these methods allows to avoid incorrect conclusions from different life situations and manipulations from other people. It is almost impossible for a rational person to brainwash half or partial truth. This gives a great competitive advantage in life.
As a scientist, it is important to me that in this book there are numerous examples of the scientific method. A method that, on the one hand, allowed our civilization to achieve an unprecedentedly high level of prosperity by the beginning of the 21st century, and, on the other hand, which is not taught practically in any university in the world. Quoting the Strugatsky one can say that this is a book that every scientific worker of a younger (and not only!) Age should read. I recommend it to all my students as an excellent guide to working with the riddles of nature and other secrets that lie in wait for us in our research work.
